SMB Plugs (Male): Types, Structure, and Uses Explained

The SMB series utilizes a tool-free, quick snap-on (push-on) coupling mechanism, enabling fast connection and rapid disconnection.

An SMB Plug features a female center contact socket. To create a secure connection, it mates with an SMB Jack (female), which features a male center contact pin. Users should push the connector straight in to connect and pull it straight out to disconnect without twisting, ensuring stable signal transmission and preserving the mechanical integrity of the mating interface.

Straight Plugs: The straight configuration is designed for standard cable assemblies and provides a direct, linear connection. This configuration delivers stable electrical performance and is highly suited for inline connections in space-constrained internal devices.

Right-Angle Plugs: Designed for low-profile or space-constrained applications, these plugs allow the cable to exit at a ninety-degree angle from the connection interface. This configuration helps prevent excessive cable bending and facilitates safe cable routing in densely populated printed circuit board assemblies or compact enclosures.

SMB Plugs (male type) are used for reliable cable termination and are installed at the end of a coaxial cable to mate with an SMB jack or receptacle. To ensure consistent electrical performance, these plugs must be terminated securely using the specified method for the connector design.

1. Cable Compatibility Check
The SMB Plug must be selected to match the specified coaxial cable type and diameter, such as RG-174, RG-316, or RD-316 double-shielded cables. Using incompatible cables can compromise the mechanical assembly and degrade electrical performance.

2. Connection of the Center Contact and the Conductor
The cable inner conductor (core wire) is connected to the female center contact of the SMB Plug. Depending on the specific connector configuration, this is typically completed by soldering or crimping with a specified tool to establish low contact resistance and reliable signal transmission.

3. Connection of the Connector Body and the Outer Shield
The cable outer shield (braid) and jacket are secured to the connector body. This is typically achieved by crimping a metal sleeve over the shield or by tightening a clamping mechanism, providing proper grounding, high mechanical strength, and protection against cable strain.
