MHV RF Connectors Guide
What are MHV RF Connectors?
MHV (Miniature High Voltage) RF connectors are coaxial connectors designed for high-voltage applications, typically supporting voltages up to 16 kV.
They feature a bayonet-style coupling similar to BNC connectors, but with modified insulation and contact design to handle higher voltage levels. Although they resemble BNC connectors in appearance, they are not mechanically compatible and cannot be mated together.
MHV connectors are commonly used in laboratory equipment, power supplies, and medical systems where moderate high-voltage transmission is required.

MHV vs BNC RF Connectors
MHV and BNC connectors share a similar bayonet coupling design, but they are intended for different applications.
BNC connectors are used in standard RF and signal applications, while MHV connectors are designed for high-voltage use with improved insulation.
Although they look similar, MHV and BNC connectors are not mechanically compatible and should not be connected to each other.
High Voltage RF Connectors (HN, MHV, SHV)
High-voltage RF connectors are designed to safely handle elevated voltage levels in specialized applications.
- HN: Suitable for high-power and high-voltage systems, offering robust insulation and high power handling capability.
- MHV: Commonly used in moderate voltage applications where compact size and cost efficiency are important.
- SHV: Designed for higher voltage environments with enhanced safety features to prevent accidental contact.
These connectors are typically used in power supplies, test equipment, and industrial systems where stable high-voltage transmission is required.
Selecting the appropriate connector depends on voltage requirements, safety considerations, and application conditions.

MHV Type RF Connector Features
compatible with high voltage
MHV (Miniature High Voltage) type rf connectors are coaxial for high voltage equipment with rated voltage up to 1.6 kV and withstand voltage up to 5 kV/min.
Coupling Method
The Bayonet lock method is an easy connection method that does not rely on threading and can be easily connected and disconnected. Insert the plug into the jack by aligning it with the guide on the jack side, and rotate the ring slightly to lock it in place, and the internal spring force will hold it firmly in place. It can be quickly removed by turning it slightly in the opposite direction, but since it is secured to the spring by a screw, it cannot be pulled out simply by pulling on the cable.
MHV Type RF Connectors Applications
MHV RF connectors are used in applications that require moderate high-voltage handling with basic insulation.
They are commonly found in high-voltage power supplies and electrical transmission lines, where stable voltage delivery is required but extreme safety measures are not critical.
In scientific and industrial environments, MHV connectors are used in nuclear instrumentation and X-ray systems, supporting signal and power transmission in controlled conditions.
They are also used in laboratory equipment and testing setups, where cost-effective high-voltage connectivity is needed without the enhanced safety features of SHV connectors.
Compared to SHV connectors, MHV connectors are typically used in environments where accessibility is controlled and the risk of accidental contact is lower.
How to Choose MHV RF Connectors
Choosing the right MHV RF connector depends on voltage requirements, safety considerations, and application conditions.
1. Confirm Voltage Requirements
Ensure the connector meets the required voltage rating for your system, especially in high-voltage applications.
2. Check Compatibility with BNC Systems
Although MHV connectors resemble BNC connectors, they are not compatible. Always verify connector type before mating.
3. Consider Safety Requirements
For applications requiring higher safety, consider using SHV connectors with enhanced insulation and protection.
4. Match Cable Type
Ensure compatibility with the coaxial cable used, including size and impedance.

MHV Type RF Connector FAQs
QCan MHV be mated with BNC or SHV connectors?
QCan MHV be mated with BNC or SHV connectors?
MHV are bayonet lock connectors incompatible with BNC or SHV connectors. MHV connectors' insulation is more extended and so cannot be mated. However, please be aware that you may be forced to do so and be able to mate them by mistake.
QCan MHV be mated with BNC or SHV connectors?
QCan MHV be mated with BNC or SHV connectors?
No. MHV connectors may look similar to BNC and SHV connectors, but they are not mechanically compatible.
The keying and insulation structure are different, and forced mating can cause arcing or electrical failure.
Always use MHV plugs and jacks together to maintain voltage integrity and safety.
QWhat is the voltage rating of MHV connectors?
QWhat is the voltage rating of MHV connectors?
MHV (Miniature High Voltage) connectors are typically rated for 1.6 kV operating voltage and up to 5 kV withstand voltage.
They are designed for moderate high-voltage use in compact systems, such as laboratory and testing instruments.
QWhen should SHV connectors be used instead of MHV?
QWhen should SHV connectors be used instead of MHV?
SHV (Safe High Voltage) connectors should be used when maximum operator safety is required.
SHV connectors recess both the center and outer contacts, preventing accidental electric shock and making them safer for applications above 2 kV or for frequent connect/disconnect operations.
QWhat are common applications of MHV connectors?
QWhat are common applications of MHV connectors?
MHV connectors are commonly used in X-ray equipment, power supplies, vacuum devices, and laboratory testing instruments where compact high-voltage connections are needed.
