Bayonet coupling is a type of coupling mechanism used to join and secure two connectors by inserting and rotating them into a locked position.

It typically employs a pin-and-slot structure, where the connector is pushed in and then twisted slightly to engage the locking mechanism.

This design enables quick and reliable connections without the need for threading.

Bayonet coupling is widely used in RF connectors such as BNC, where fast and repeatable connections are required.

This mechanism is often referred to as a “bayonet lock,” although “bayonet coupling” is the more precise term when describing the overall connection method.

In RF and coaxial systems, bayonet coupling is valued for its balance between speed and reliability.

It allows connectors to be quickly attached and detached, making it suitable for test equipment and applications requiring frequent connections.

Compared to threaded coupling, bayonet mechanisms provide faster operation, although the mechanical retention force may be slightly lower.

The consistent locking action helps maintain stable electrical contact and repeatable performance.
